Mid-Year Checkup: Is Your HVAC System Efficient?

Mid-Year Checkup: Is Your HVAC System Efficient?

We are officially halfway through the year. In Traverse City, that means we are in the thick of summer—enjoying the lakes, the festivals, and the sunshine. It also means your air conditioner has likely been running a marathon since that first warm spell in May.

While we often think of “spring cleaning” or “winterizing” as the main events for home maintenance, the mid-year checkup is just as critical. It’s the perfect time to audit your home’s energy efficiency before the dog days of August arrive (and before we start thinking about heating season again).

Is your system actually efficient, or is it just “working”? Here is a simple mid-year audit you can perform to ensure you aren’t throwing money out the window.

1. The "Envelope" Audit: Windows and Doors

Your HVAC system might be brand new, but if your home’s “envelope” (the physical barrier between the inside and outside) is leaky, your equipment has to work twice as hard.

  • The Light Test: On a sunny Traverse City afternoon, close your exterior doors and look for sunlight peeking through the edges. If you see light, air is escaping.

  • The Rattle Test: Gently push on your windows. If they rattle in their frames, the seal is likely compromised.

  • The Fix: easy-to-apply weatherstripping or a fresh bead of caulk can seal these gaps instantly. It keeps the expensive cool air in now and will keep the biting cold out later.

2. The Insulation Check

Insulation isn’t just about staying warm in a Michigan winter; it is the primary barrier that stops the summer heat from radiating into your living space.

  • Attic Inspection: Pop your head into the attic. Can you see the floor joists? If so, you likely need more insulation. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends up to R-60 for attics in our northern climate zone.

  • Wall Touch Test: On a hot day, touch your interior walls. They should feel cool. If they feel warm to the touch, your wall insulation may be settling or insufficient, forcing your A/C to run longer cycles to compensate.

3. System Performance: The "Cottonwood" Factor

Here in Northern Michigan, we deal with specific local debris—specifically cottonwood seeds and pine needles. These can be silent killers of HVAC efficiency.

  • Check the Outdoor Unit: Go outside to your condenser (the big box with the fan). Is it wearing a “sweater” of white cottonwood fuzz? This debris blocks airflow, causing the system to overheat and consume massive amounts of electricity. Gently rinse it off with a garden hose (angled downward), or call us for a deep clean.

  • The Filter: Pull your air filter. If it’s gray or clogged, replace it immediately. A dirty filter is the #1 cause of HVAC inefficiency and frozen evaporator coils.

  • Thermostat Logic: Are you constantly adjusting the temperature? If your thermostat says 72° but it feels like 78°, your thermostat may need recalibration, or your system may be struggling to keep up with humidity.

4. When to Call the Pros

A DIY audit is great for surface-level checks, but true efficiency lies deep inside the mechanics of your system. There are certain things only a certified technician can gauge:

  • Refrigerant Levels: Low refrigerant doesn’t just mean less cooling; it means your compressor has to work harder, shortening its lifespan.

  • Electrical Connections: Vibrations can loosen wires over time, leading to unsafe operation and intermittent failures.

  • Ductwork Integrity: We can inspect for hidden leaks in your ductwork that might be dumping conditioned air into your basement or crawlspace.

Summary

An efficient home is a comfortable home. By taking twenty minutes to check your windows, insulation, and outdoor unit today, you can save significantly on your energy bills for the rest of the year.

If you suspect your system is lagging, or if you just want peace of mind knowing your A/C is ready for the rest of the summer, we are here to help.
