- Physical Drafts: If you stand near a window and physically feel cold air moving, the seal has likely failed, or the weatherstripping is worn out.
- Condensation and Frost: Moisture buildup between panes of glass indicates a broken seal. Ice forming on the inside of the window pane means the glass is too cold, pulling heat out of your room rapidly.
- The Touch Test: While glass will naturally be cooler than a solid wall, it shouldn’t feel like an ice block. If the glass is freezing to the touch, you are losing significant energy through conduction.
- Visible Gaps: If you can see daylight around the window frame or if the sash rattles in the wind, your insulation is compromised.
The Suspect: Your Furnace (Heat Generation)

- Strange Noises: Bangs, squeals, or rattles are not normal. These usually indicate a mechanical failure, such as a loose belt or a failing motor.
- Short Cycling: Does your furnace turn on for a few minutes and then shut off, only to turn back on again shortly after? This is called “short cycling” and often prevents the home from reaching the target temperature.
- The Air Feels Tepid: Put your hand near a vent. The air coming out should be hot. If it feels lukewarm or cool even when the system is running, your burners or pilot light may be malfunctioning.
- Age of the Unit: If your furnace is over 15–20 years old, it has likely lost significant efficiency. It may be running, but it’s working twice as hard to produce the same amount of heat.
- Uneven Heating: If the living room is a sauna but the bedrooms are freezers (and your windows are fine), your furnace blower may not be strong enough to circulate air effectively, or you may have ductwork issues.
The DIY Test: The Candle Experiment
If you aren’t sure where to start, try this simple test on a windy day.
- Light a candle or an incense stick.
- Carefully hold it near the frames of your windows (be safe with the flame!).
- Watch the smoke:
- If the smoke wavers or blows horizontally, you have a drafty window leak.
- If the smoke rises steadily but the room is still cold, the issue is likely your furnace or insulation in the walls/attic.
The DIY Test: The Candle Experiment
Diagnosing the wrong problem can be expensive. We have seen homeowners spend thousands replacing windows, only to find their house is still cold because the furnace was the actual issue. Conversely, buying a high-efficiency furnace won’t lower your bills much if you keep the windows open to the winter air.
