Back to School, Back to Routine: Is Your Plumbing Ready?

Back to School, Back to Routine: Is Your Plumbing Ready?

In Traverse City, the end of summer means more than just shorter days and the return of the Friday night lights. It means your household is about to shift from a relaxed, staggered summer pace to the high-intensity “Morning Rush.”

When the alarm clocks start syncing up, your plumbing system is suddenly asked to perform at 110%. From multiple showers running simultaneously to the kitchen sink handling heavy lunch prep, the sudden spike in water usage can reveal small issues before they become big (and expensive) headaches.

At Grant Mechanical, we believe a little preparation goes a long way. Here is how you can ensure your home’s plumbing is ready for the school year.

1. Defeat the Drain Clog Before It Starts

With more people showering in a shorter window of time, hair and soap scum buildup become the leading cause of slow drains.

  • The Fix: Install inexpensive mesh hair catchers in every tub and shower. It’s much easier to clean a strainer than it is to clear a pipe buried behind your tile.

  • The Rule: Remind the kids that only the “three Ps” (pee, poop, and paper) go down the toilet. Wet wipes—even those labeled “flushable”—are a leading cause of backups in our local Traverse City sewer lines.

2. Audit Your Water Heater

There is nothing quite like a cold shower to ruin a Monday morning. If your water heater is struggling to keep up with the back-to-back demand:

  • Check the Temperature: Ensure your heater is set to 120°F (49°C). This is the “sweet spot” for safety and efficiency.

  • Flush the Sediment: In Northern Michigan, our water can carry minerals that settle at the bottom of your tank, reducing its capacity. If you haven’t had your water heater flushed in the last year, now is the time.

3. Mind the Kitchen Sink

There is nothing quite like a cold shower to ruin a Monday morning. If your water heater is struggling to keep up with the back-to-back demand:

  • Avoid the “Big Three”: Never put grease, pasta/rice, or fibrous veggies (like celery or potato peels) down the disposal. They expand or create a paste that will eventually stop your kitchen sink in its tracks.

4. Listen for "Ghost Flushing" or Leaks

A running toilet might not seem like a big deal during a busy summer, but once the house is quiet after the bus picks up the kids, listen closely. A leaking flapper can waste hundreds of gallons of water a month, driving up your utility bill just as the heating season approaches.

Don’t Let a Plumbing Hiccup Ruin Your Schedule

The school year is stressful enough without having to call an emergency plumber at 7:30 AM. A quick inspection of your home’s “high-traffic” areas now can save you a world of frustration later.

If you notice slow drains, strange noises in your pipes, or if your water isn’t staying hot through the third shower of the morning, give us a call. At Grant Mechanical, we’ve been helping Traverse City families stay comfortable and worry-free for years.
